A few families in the Chianti Classico wine area of Tuscany offer the
opportunity for visitors, usually a single family or 2-3 couples
vacationing together, to enjoy dinner in a local family home. These
dinners cost much the same as an equivalent restaurant meal but offer not
only very different traditional dishes but also the opportunity to
see how the people live in the Tuscan countryside.
Traditional
Tuscan cuisine is very different from standard Tuscan restaurant fare for
the simple reason that the main courses require long cooking.
Furthermore, the sauces and pasta often taste much better because
they are genuinely homemade. Many restaurants offering
"homemade" dishes have them delivered every morning from
local factories - the latter constituents are fresh and tasty but
they invariably have the characteristics of mass production about
them. For this reason, we offer the alternative to dine in a
family home where the recipes are those passed down within the
family.
Contact These dinners consist of several courses, including a
meat dish such as pheasant, rabbit, hare, venison, kid, wild
boar etc. Local wines are served along with mineral water.
Unusual pasta and ewes'
milk cheese (pecorino) are usually part of
the evening.
The occasion is an intimate one shared only with the
family and a family friend who acts as interpreter.
Children are welcome.
In Tuscany, dinner normally starts at 8 pm on the dot, but
earlier times can be arranged. The families offering this
opportunity live in the vicinity of Montefioralle,
near Greve
in Chianti, and a walking tour of
Montefioralle usually precedes dinner.
For 2012, we have possibilities during the period mid-April
into mid-October. However, feel free to ask about earlier
and later dates. These can usually be arranged but with
the tour and dinner starting earlier.
